About Ueno Zoological Garden

Ueno Zoological Garden
Ueno Zoological Gardens, located in Taito-ku, Tokyo, is known as the first zoo in Japan and has been popular with many citizens and tourists since it opened in 1882.

The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, the "Panda Forest," where visitors can see giant pandas, is particularly popular.

The annual number of visitors exceeds several million, making the Ueno area a major destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Challenge

◾Ueno Zoo, Japan’s oldest zoo located in Tokyo, faced challenges in managing visitor safety and crowd control following the reopening after a temporary closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

◾While limiting entrance numbers with tickets helped, the zoo needed a better way to monitor real-time crowd density inside the park to ensure visitor safety and manage congestion effectively.

The Solution

◾Ueno Zoo implemented a cloud-based visitor counting solution, which was already in use at other facilities managed by the Tokyo Zoological Park Society.

◾This system provided real-time tracking of visitor numbers across the zoo’s two main zones, allowing staff to manage crowd flow and ensure safety.

◾It also enabled the zoo to gather important data like average visitor stay times, which helped in the planning and optimization of visitor routes and overall zoo operations.

The Result

◾The system allowed the zoo to monitor real-time congestion, helping them communicate crowd levels via social media and improve on-site visitor guidance.

◾The data also provided insights into peak times, average visitor dwell time, and seasonal trends, allowing the zoo to tailor their operations accordingly.

◾Future plans include using this data to enhance visitor experiences, manage crowd flow more efficiently to encourage exploration of the entire park.
