Tenjin Underground Shopping Mall
Revolutionized Retail Operations with Real-Time Visitor Data
About Tenjin Chikagai
Stretching approximately 600 meters, it features 12 avenues and around 150 shops, including fashion, gourmet, and specialty stores.
Opened in 1976, the mall is directly connected to three major railway stations offering excellent accessibility.
Tenjin Chikagai serves as both a commercial hub and a vital pedestrian route, attracting 200,000–300,000 visitors daily.
Challenge
◾Tenjin Chikagai faced significant challenges in understanding visitor traffic and movement patterns.
◾This lack of real-time data hindered the ability to measure the effectiveness of promotional campaigns, analyze the impact of external factors such as weather or nearby events, and provide convincing explanations to tenants regarding fluctuations in sales and visitor numbers.
◾Leasing efforts were also complicated, as tenant companies from outside the region struggled to grasp the mall’s actual foot traffic without objective data.
The Solution
◾In response to these challenges, Tenjin Chikagai introduced a sophisticated people-counting system in 2015, deploying 52 sensors discreetly to preserve the mall’s unified ceiling design.
◾The selection criteria focused on three key aspects: high accuracy, operational stability, and ease of maintenance.
◾The solution enabled daily monitoring via dashboards, integration with sales management systems, and the ability to correlate traffic data with sales figures.
The Result
◾Since implementation, the people-counting system has operated stably for over ten years, supported by robust monitoring and rapid response to any issues.
◾The availability of real-time traffic data has transformed daily operations, allowing for detailed analysis of visitor flows, sales trends, and the impact of external events.
◾Looking ahead, Tenjin Chikagai plans to enhance its data utilization by analyzing visitor demographics, further optimizing tenant mix and marketing strategies, and strengthening its role as a model for data-driven urban management.
