The complex spans approximately 49,000 sqm, with a retail area of about 26,500 sqm.
To visualize customer traffic trends, the complex installed a customer counting system upon reopening in April 2024.
Challenge
◾JR East Niigata City Create Inc. operates CoCoLo Niigata, a large commercial facility directly connected to JR Niigata Station.
◾In 2024, the facility underwent a major renovation, expanding from around 90 stores to 170, with new stores making their debut in Niigata.
◾To optimize operations and understand customer behavior in this revamped space, they needed a reliable system to track foot traffic and monitor customer flow across the complex.
The Solution
◾To meet these needs, a people counting systems has been implemented to provide real-time data of visitor numbers and movement patterns throughout the facility, including vital areas such as entrances, exits, and key pathways.
◾The data helped identify high-traffic areas and offered insights into how visitors moved through the complex, enabling more informed operational decisions.
The Result
◾The data revealed several surprising insights, including higher-than-expected weekend foot traffic, with over 100,000 visitors per day on some weekends—much higher than initially anticipated.
◾The system also highlighted unexpected entry points and popular pathways, providing valuable information for operational adjustments and tenant support.
◾With this real-time data, CoCoLo Niigata has been able to better optimize its space, enhance customer experience, and continue to attract and manage large numbers of visitors effectively, reinforcing its role as a key commercial hub in the region.
